| A couple of years ago, I hit one of those creative walls. Work was steady, life was full, but I wanted something that felt mine. A project I could play with outside of work hours. Something creative, low-stakes, and genuinely fun.
That's when I decided to open an Etsy shop.
I didn't have products sitting in my closet. I wasn't sourcing inventory or learning to ship things. I just had an idea: printable games and activities for couples, families, and friends, designed to bring people together around birthdays, holidays, and random Tuesday nights.
I created the games, designed the PDFs in Canva, uploaded them to Etsy, and offered them as instant digital downloads.
Here's exactly how I did it, and how you can too:
🧠 Step 1: Start with What You Know (and Like)
Instead of forcing myself into a trend, I leaned into something I already loved: making fun, themed games for get-togethers. Think Christmas trivia, "Would You Rather" cards for Valentine's Day, printable date-night dares, or backyard scavenger hunts for 4th of July BBQs.
I kept a running list of seasonal ideas and focused on the moments people are already searching for.
✏️ Step 2: Create Your Product in Canva
Canva made it easy to design polished PDFs without needing a design background. I used it to create everything from party games to icebreakers to couples' challenges, formatting each file as a digital download.
A few tips that helped me: Use Canva's layout templates to speed things up Add fun illustrations or cute icons to match each theme Keep instructions clear and cleanly formatted Export everything as a high-quality PDF
🛍 Step 3: Set Up Your Etsy Shop
Etsy is super user-friendly, especially for digital products. I uploaded my files, wrote brief and clear descriptions, and created a few sample images to show what the games looked like in use.
Helpful things I learned along the way: Keywords matter! Think like a customer (e.g., "Christmas party game," "couple's date night printable") Preview images help build trust Bundle products for seasonal packs to increase value (like a "Winter Game Night Kit")
📌 What I Learned About Side Hustling Starting small is underrated. I didn't need a big plan to begin; just one good idea and a few hours on Canva. Digital products are a great intro to entrepreneurship. No shipping, no inventory, no overhead. Creativity counts. The shop gave me an outlet to test ideas, try designs, and build something I was proud of. Even if it's temporary, a side hustle teaches you a ton about yourself, your habits, and what energizes you.
