Click here December 2025 What were the 10 most important Developments in SA during 2025?By Steuart Pennington I did some thinking about the 10 most important developments in SA over the past year, across our economy, infrastructure, social policy, and global standing. I selected these because together they hint at a country working to overcome long-standing challenges and build more stable institutions and opportunities. I’ve been very influenced by the book “Why Nations Fail” and the emphasis the authors put on ‘institutional health’, both political and economic, differentiating ‘extractive’ institutions from ‘inclusive’ institutions. Below is evidence of a move towards more ‘inclusive’ institutions, notwithstanding the fact that EWC, NHI, BEE, BELA, 143 Race Laws are clear examples of a sinister move to roll back exiting ‘healthy institutions’ and re-establish them as ‘extractive’ institutions.

Across South Africa, entrepreneurship pulses in taxi ranks, township streets, rural markets, and roadside stalls. It’s in the everyday hustle of informal traders, spaza shop owners, street vendors, and small service providers that the real economy lives and breathes. These entrepreneurs feed communities, create jobs, and drive the culture of resilience that defines South African enterprise. “South Africa’s informal economy is full of innovation and hard work...” Blessing Manguno – Camps Bay High School’s 2026 Head PrefectThe Making of a Head Prefect. Camps Bay High School’s 2026 Head Prefect: Blessing Manguno – Leading With Heart, Courage and Authenticity When the announcement was made at a special assembly and Blessing Manguno’s name was called as Camps Bay High School’s 2026 Head Prefect, he describes the moment as “surreal.” “It took a few seconds to sink in,” he reflects. “I didn’t expect it at all. The most special part was that in that moment, I suddenly remembered how far I’ve come. Everything I’ve faced… and how I’ve kept going. It was overwhelming in the best way.” For many at Camps Bay High School, the news felt absolutely right. Blessing is the kind of learner who instantly lights up a space, not because he tries to – but because he can’t help it. His warmth, kindness and effortless ability to connect with people have made him a beloved figure on campus. He is also one of the school’s most remarkable achievers. In Grade 11, he achieved a rare triple win at the Jan van Riebeeck Arts Festival, taking first place for the highest marks in Creative Writing, Drama and Singing. He maintains a consistent A aggregate. He dances, he sings, he writes, he leads, he gives. He serves the school through involvement with the Interact Society, the Catering Team, the PR Team, and in countless quiet ways people often don’t see... World Children’s Day: Giving children the gift of reading in their home languagesWorld Children’s Day is a reminder of our collective responsibility to nurture, protect and raise the next generation of leaders in our society. Among the many rights children hold, the right to quality education remains one of the most critical – and the most closely tied to their future wellbeing. This year’s World Children’s Day theme is My World, My Rights, which emphasises children’s right to access information and learn in ways that honour their identity. South Africa’s literacy challenges remain a deep concern. Last week, the Department of Basic Education’s Funda Uphumelele National Survey revealed that only 3 out of 10 learners in the foundation phase are reading at the expected level for their age. Even more alarming, the study found that up to 70% of learners in Grade 1-3 struggle to recognise letters or read words quickly enough to understand them. This not only becomes an academic hindrance but transcends into long-term struggles with confidence levels, comprehension challenges and educational outcomes. The report points towards a powerful solution – children who are taught and supported in their home languages consistently perform academically better than those who are not. When children learn in a language they already speak and understand, they are able to build strong literacy foundations, comprehend content more effectively, and transition more confidently into additional languages like English later on. In South Africa, where multilingualism is a national strength, the integration of home-language literacy into early education is not just beneficial; it is essential... Mellon Educate, the international charity founded by Irish philanthropist Niall Mellon, is best known for building housing for 250,000 of South Africa’s most vulnerable families. This week, on the dusty school grounds of Cape Town’s townships, Mellon Educate ’s 2025 Building Blitz is underway, the organisation is building literacy, brick by brick, classroom by classroom, including dedicated Literacy Hubs created for one-to-one tutoring and digital learning environments. Western Cape MEC for Education, David Maynier, attending the event, said, “We are very proud of this strong partnership with a school, Mellon Educate, and the Department, all mobilising around a common goal to improve literacy..."
