What's driving Lindsey Vonn's unprecedented comeback

One of the privileges of being at TIME is getting the chance to witness the world's most influential people as their journeys play out across multiple decades. We recently featured Bruce Springsteen in the magazine fifty years after The Boss first appeared on our cover. This week we caught up with Lindsey Vonn, the U.S. skier who joined the TIME100 back in 2013.

Fast forward to today and the 41-year-old is mounting a comeback in sports with little precedent. At 33, Vonn became the oldest female alpine Olympics medalist. Now after partial knee replacement surgery, she is hoping to crush that record once again. To tell that story, TIME's Sean Gregory, who was a finalist last year for the inaugural Billie Jean King Award for his women's sports coverage, spent time with Vonn as she prepared for this winter's ski season and the 2026 Games.
