My Spooky Season Horror Watchlist

Fall is my absolute favorite, and Halloween is basically my Super Bowl. At least once a week, my best friends and I pile onto my giant white couch with wine in hand, snacks on deck, and zero shame about our horror obsession. We'll watch anything in this genre—sometimes it's "so bad, it's good," other times it scares the sh*t out of us. Either way, it's always a 10/10 hang.

This is the horror watchlist I'd text my besties (and now it's yours too) in no particular order:

  • Weapons: This past week's horror movie night pick, and it did not disappoint. Suspenseful, told through a multi-perspective storyline, and featuring an antagonist who's creepy AF. It's not the kind of film where you're hiding behind your hands, but the high-tension moments had us holding our breath (and audibly gasping). The flashes of humor woven into the horror felt so real and made it even better.

  • Hereditary: Probably one of the scariest horror movies I've ever seen, and always the first I mention when people ask about my faves. From the shocking twist in the first half to the intense crescendo of the final scenes, this one will make you want to sleep with the lights on.

  • Dangerous Animals: My BFF and I are obsessed with Shark Week and serial killer flicks, so imagine our delight when this movie basically said, "Why not both?" My husband was skeptical when we made him watch this with us, but even he admitted it was actually good.

  • Heart Eyes: I've been waiting for a good modern slasher since I'm obsessed with all the Scream/Halloween movies. This one leans more comedy-horror, but I loved that it didn't take itself too seriously.

  • Smile 2: It's rare for a sequel to beat the O.G., but imo this one hit harder than the first. The scares feel sharper, the tension's relentless, and the ending is epic.

  • Oddity: Overall a fun ride, full of red herrings and jump scares (but not cheap ones). It gave me the same vibes as swapping scary stories around the campfire.

  • Barbarian: Do not Google the plot. Just press play. The twists are wild, and it's best to go in blind. I loooved Justin Long in this.

  • Heretic: Consensus in my friend group: Hugh Grant should only play horror villains from now on. And since I went to Catholic school K–12, anything with a religious backdrop hits extra hard. This one had me on edge the whole way through, and Chloe East was an absolute standout.

  • Bodies Bodies Bodies: This movie is the most Gen Z slasher satire you'll ever see—and you should totally watch it. It's messy, funny, and keeps you guessing. That ending? Not even close to what you expect.

  • Fresh: Starts like a flirty rom-com, then takes a sharp left into your worst dating nightmare, with dark humor sprinkled in. And no, you will not want snacks during this one.

  • Host: Shot entirely over Zoom during the pandemic, and somehow scarier than most big-budget horror flicks. There are some sharp scares in this one, and it reminded me of the first Paranormal Activity.

  • The Substance: Body horror at its finest, and yes, Demi Moore was a total knockout in this. I thoroughly enjoyed how different the plot was, and it deserved all the praise it got. (P.S. comes out on MAX 10/10.)

  • Talk to Me: An A24 movie about teenagers messing with the supernatural? Say less. Some truly unforgettable and disturbing scenes in this one (though I still thought Hereditary was better).

  • When Evil Lurks: I gotta say, this one is brutal, bleak, and not for the faint of heart, but a must-watch when it comes to recent horror.

  • The Wailing: If you're new to Korean horror, boy, are you missing out. This one is a haunting, folkloric slow burn. Gorgeous, layered, and chilling.

There are so many more I could list here, but these should get you through this spooky season πŸ˜‰.

Beat the Sunday Scaries With a Better System

It's Sunday night. Your mind should be on takeout and Netflix, but instead it's spiraling through half-finished projects, looming deadlines, and a to-do list that somehow grew over the weekend.

That pit in your stomach? Classic Sunday Scaries. They don't come from laziness; they come from a lack of clarity and control. When you don't know what's waiting Monday morning, it's hard to shut your brain off.

The best way to fight the Sunday Scaries isn't more coffee; it's starting the week with systems that work for you.

STAFF PICKS

Graphic showing four book covers labeled

In honor of National Book Month, we've selected our top reads & why!

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King (Cameron's Pick)

"Mr. Mercedes is my all-time favorite book because it has everything I love in a story: twists, tension, and that true crime grit that keeps me hooked. What really makes it special is the way King builds his characters and plants tiny details that later blow your mind. It's one of those books that kept me up way too late, totally lost in the world he created. Even better, this is part one of a trilogy!"

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Kristel's Pick)

"I come back to this book again and again because it captures so many contradictions: hope and heartbreak, beauty and delusion, ambition and emptiness. The language is sharp and stunning, and there's something about Gatsby's quiet desperation and obsession with reinvention that always gets me. It's a story about us, the masks we wear, and how far we'll go for the life we think we deserve."

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Joanna's Pick)

"I'm a big fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid's writing and have read Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Daisy Jones & The Six, Carrie Soto is Back, and Malibu Rising. So when Atmosphere came out, I immediately picked it up. Like her others, I loved this one too. It's a beautifully tense love story set in the stars: an astronomer turned astronaut trains with NASA in the '80s, falls for a fellow astronaut, and gets caught between ambition, family, and life-or-death space danger."

Chasing Daylight by Erwin McManus (Thania's Pick)

"I'm currently re-reading this book and I love how it reframes untapped potential with urgency and clarity: "Somehow we all know that to play it safe is to lose the game." McManus challenges leaders to step into the creative order, seize the moment, and start shaping a better future instead of waiting for it."
