Today will bring some closures and adjusted hours for the holiday. Government offices and post offices will be closed, with regular mail delivery paused for the day. Most banks will also be closed for the federal banking holiday, although online services and ATMs will remain available. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed as well. For those looking to do some grocery shopping, most supermarket chains will operate on their usual schedules, but Costco warehouses will be closed. Major retailers, including Walmart and Target, will remain open. Hours may vary by location, though, so it’s best to check before heading out.

Labor Day grew out of the labor movement of the late 1800s, when many Americans worked long hours in harsh and often dangerous conditions. As unions pushed for better pay, safer workplaces and shorter workdays, workers also began calling for a holiday in their honor. One of the country’s first Labor Day parades was held in New York City in 1882, and the idea soon spread nationwide. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making Labor Day a federal holiday, now observed on the first Monday of September.

The summer travel season is ending on a busy note, with the FAA expecting more than 280,000 flights nationwide between September 2 and 8. Major airlines are in the midst of the Labor Day rush: United expects more than 3.4 million passengers over the holiday period, about 300,000 more than last year, while American Airlines forecasts more than 3.5 million travelers. Domestic airfares are also up 2% from last year, according to AAA, as millions of travelers squeeze in one final trip before the start of fall.

Labor Day may be America’s unofficial end of summer, but the season isn’t technically over just yet. Meteorological fall began on September 1, but astronomical summer sticks around until the autumnal equinox on September 22, when the sun crosses directly over the equator and day and night are roughly equal in length. From there, daylight will continue to dwindle in the Northern Hemisphere as winter approaches.
