There is a need to lower operating expenses relative to gross farm returns. That will happen through higher grain farm prices, lower operating expenses, or a combination of the two. If grain prices do not increase, the reduction in operating expenses will require difficult adjustments. However, the current period of low prices is unlikely to lead to a financial crisis like the one in the 1980s.
