Plus the best travel strollers, packing tips, and more expert advice
| | | I remember feeling incredibly proud of myself the first time I stepped off a plane with my then 9-month-old. His first flight had been pretty smooth, all things considered, despite some pre-takeoff anxieties on my part. Both of us felt lighter, and not only because of a mid-flight diaper change (whew!).
Traveling with kids is its own kind of marathon—for which there's no real training. But the right gear (just like the right running shoes) can help. On my shortlist? A smart travel stroller, a great baby carrier, and a highly functional diaper bag. Plus, plenty of snacks—for everybody.
We've racked up many miles since that first trip, and somewhere along the way, I finally realized that no one else really cares if your kid has a meltdown. At worst, it's a temporary inconvenience to your seatmates; at best, that's what noise-canceling headphones are for. And, according to the flight attendants we interviewed, it's truly OK to let your kids cry. "The general traveling public is pretty patient with people traveling with children," says Casandra R., a flight attendant based in Philadelphia. "I always see people helping." Happy skies, indeed.
It's OK to ask for help!
