November 15, 2025 The unexpected career of Nancy Pelosi BY SAM JACOBS Editor in Chief, TIME "When Nancy Pelosi arrived in Congress in 1987, not much was expected of her," Molly Ball wrote for TIME after the 85-year-old former House Speaker announced on Thursday that she would not seek re-election after 20 terms. A former senior correspondent for TIME, Ball wrote the book on Pelosi–the 2020 New York Times bestseller Pelosi. Ball also wrote the first TIME cover story on her in 2018. (That the cover first appeared nearly a decade after she first became Speaker did not go unnoticed.) The Democrat is perhaps best known today for serving as the primary foil for Donald Trump during his first term. She oversaw the passage of the Affordable Care Act and more recently was one of the few leaders Democrats looked to during the chaotic final days of Joe Biden's 2024 presidential campaign.
