The Water Test and Witch Trials in Renaissance Germany

Join the John W. Kluge Center for an event taking place on December 10, 2025, at 4pm, in LJ-119 in the Thomas Jefferson Building.

Click here to register to watch live remotely on Zoom.

Nathan Dorn, Library of Congress Staff Fellow at the Kluge Center, and Rare Books Curator at the Law Library of Congress, will discuss the practice of dunking people who were accused of the crime of witchcraft in water to determine their guilt or innocence. Dorn will discuss a 1583 pamphlet by Wilhelm Schreiber, often known as Scribonius, defending the practice, highlighting the interplay of folk belief, natural philosophy, demonology, and law that shaped the arguments around it.

This event will take place in person in room LJ-119 of the Library's Thomas Jefferson Building, and can be watched live on Zoom. We will also release video of the event.
